After losing out to the Chevrolet Camaro for the past five years, the Mustang is revving its engine and picking up the pace. The two pony cars have been duking it out for years to see who would take the title of best-selling muscle car.
This year, it looks like the Mustang is taking control of the race. Mustang sales skyrocketed at the beginning of 2015, and that trend has held strong. A new engine option, better tech, and a shiny new safety rating has opened car buyers’ eyes to the pony car.
Sales put the pedal to the metal and shot up 124% this January compared to January 2014. February saw the strongest Mustang sales since 2007. So far in 2015, sales are up 66% and that’s no laughing matter. Over 17,000 new 2015 Mustangs have touched tires to pavement compared to just 11,000 Camaros.
Previously limited to enthusiasts with V6 and V8 engine options, the new Mustang comes with a four-cylinder motor as well. The EcoBoost engine is pulling in those more conscious about fuel economy while maintaining its popularity among those who have a need for speed.
The V8 pulls in 16 mpg city and 25 mpg highway. The EcoBoost jumps to 21 mpg city and 32 mpg highway. New safety tech includes a rearview camera, more crash sensors, and double the number of airbags. Throw on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s five-star overall score, and the beast is better than ever.
